Genomic testing helps producers identify goats in the herd that have the greatest genetic potential and testing can identify and develop important traits for the quality of your goats. Genetic testing also gives buyers confidence in knowing that the goat they are purchasing is absolutely 100% on their genetic tested certificate.
Parental DNA Genetic testing is currently available for goats here in Australia. There are 2 methods that can be achieved in obtaining the samples. Firstly, DNA is extracted from ear tissue of blood and skin or tail hair samples including the follicle. DNA makes up the "genome' or genetic code of an individual animal.
This DNA based parentage test uses micro-satellite marker analysis to compare the DNA profile of an offspring to the profile of possible parents. KRGSA supports and encourages all members to complete DNA Parental testing on their fullblood goats for assurance and transparency for the Kalahari Red goat industry and many breeders have almost completed their herds already.
KRGSA Members chosen DNA testing supplier is Neogen Australasia.
The national performance recording scheme (KIDPLAN) is a database that was made available by Sheep Genetics. Kidplan provides simple, practical information on the value of an animals genetic potential for production in the form of estimated breeding values (EBVs) and specialised data to give the best opportunity for genetic improvement in meat goats. EBV's accurately identify the value of an animals genes by using 3 sources of information.
More information can be found on Meat & Livestock Australia's website (www.mla.com.au)
KRGSA recommends all producers gain knowledge of this program and implement it to their breeding programs so the future quality and performance of all Kalahari Red goats used in commercial and stud settings can surpass expectations and improve the national herd.
